There is an awful lot of information that we would give anyone who contacted us in relation to looking for a Staffordshire Bull Terrier puppy.
And so, we really wanted to keep it brief but educational to all who visited our site. Hopefully you’ll read below and make your own opinions as to what to look for when searching for a puppy.
Staffordshire Bull Terriers were initially bred to be a perfect blend of Terrier and Bull Dog,... And so we arrive at the descriptive term of “Type”. Some are more Terrier and some lines are more Bull Dog. We recommend all interested parties look at the dog profiles listed on Dogzonline, to see what “Type” you prefer. Contact details are provided so that you may contact the owners to enquire as to any prospective litters.
FACT - Staffordshire Bull Terriers are a highly sought after breed. People do breed to make money !
ASK - How many litters they are having or have had. If they are only breeding to keep a dog, then financial profit is not their motivation. If the breeders register 3 - 5 litters a year, I would recommend NOT supporting puppy farmers.
ASK - Why did they choose the sire? The answer should simply be because he compliments the bitches faults. Real breeders will go to great lengths to IMPROVE every litter, be that through teeth, angulation, hereditary or breed specific faults.
ASK - To visit their kennels. You’ll see very quickly if the breeder is passionate about the breed, or passionate about breeding.
ASK - If the breeder genetically tests all litters for the hereditary diseases L2-HGA and HC. More info here SBT Club of WA inc.
ASK - If the breeder is involved in any Staffordshire Bull Terrier or general canine clubs, committees or organisations.
BLUES - So you’d like to buy a “Blue” because it’s a cool colour or it’s really rare. Well, it’s not rare at all.
What’s a “Blue” or a “Fawn”? It’s hard to answer without getting into a genetics lecture. Basically “Blue” is a washed out black and a “Fawn” is a washed out red. Washed out meaning lack of pigment.
Why are they so expensive? Somewhere along the line a profiteering breeder realised that people would pay more for a “rare” colour and managed to sell off the puppy for a greatly exaggerated price. I’ve heard of people paying up to $3500 for a “Blue” bitch.
The story so far... “Blues” and “Fawns” have always been around. Way back in the early days of the breeds official recognition the colours Blue and Fawn were penciled as accepted colours. Without human intervention however, they should ONLY very rarely come up in litters. Genetically both Sire and Dame must carry the gene to reproduce “Blues” and “Fawns”.
The trend was to breed “Blues” and then it moved to “Blue Pieds”. I have seen a person purchase a male and female “Blue” for $5,000 and tell me they were a mating pair and how much money he was going make from the puppies.....
There is nothing wrong with the colour, there is something very wrong with breeding for the colour alone. There are 17 confirmation points within the Staffordshire Bull Terrier Standard. To neglect all of those, just to breed for colour, you CAN NOT expect these breeders to be trying to improve each and every litter, when they are simply trying to reproduce “Blue” dogs every time.
If a breeder of “Blues” was not breeding to profiteer, then why wouldn’t they ask a normal price for a pup?
